Fans flood Rohini Silver Screens as Padayappa returns on Thalaiva’s 75th birthday, turning a cinema hall into a festival of music and nostalgia.
December 12 is a milestone day for Rajinikanth fans, and this year it’s even bigger as the superstar turns 75. His 1999 blockbuster Padayappa has re-released to packed houses, with diehard fans filling Chennai’s Rohini Silver Screens for the first day first show celebrations. The cinema is transformed into a festive hub, decked with posters and banners reading 'happy birthday Thalaiva' as a DJ spins his iconic numbers at the entrance.
Dancers and fans soak in the atmosphere, dancing to the film’s punchy tracks and turn-of-the-century charisma. Yogaraj D, a professional dancer from OMR, says he’s thrilled for the chance to experience Padayappa on the big screen again after many years. “I was too young when it released,” he smiles, “This is a great chance to celebrate that magic.”
Satish K, a 34-year-old IT professional from Poonamallee, recalls watching it as a child in Tiruvottiyur’s Raghavendra Theatre. He calls the re-release a wholesome, memory-filled experience that blends comedy, action, and stylish sequences. “To relive it now is amazing,” he adds, noting how the film’s punch dialogues and motivational moments still resonate. The atmosphere is a mix of nostalgia and pure cinema joy as fans cheer and share memories.
A key undercurrent of the celebration is the film’s careful shielding from TV and OTT platforms, a decision tied to making the re-release a special kondattam, or gift, for fans. Rajinikanth himself wanted the moment to feel intimate and exclusive, amplifying the communal thrill of watching Padayappa on the big screen again.
