Mumbai is finally experiencing the much-awaited monsoon, bringing significant relief from the heat but also leading to typical urban challenges like waterlogging and traffic snarls. After a delay from its usual arrival around June 10, the southwest monsoon has now firmly established itself over the financial capital, with heavy rains lashing the city for the second consecutive day. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an orange alert, urging citizens to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has provided a comprehensive weather outlook for other parts of the country as well. Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected to persist over Northeast India until June 25, and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim until June 22. This brings potential for localized flooding and disruption in these regions.
Meanwhile, a stark contrast in weather conditions is predicted for several central and eastern states. Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are likely to continue over Vidarbha, East Madhya Pradesh, and East Uttar Pradesh for the next four to five days. Similar heat wave conditions are also anticipated over Chhattisgarh for the next three days and Telangana for the next two days. Parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are also under a heat wave alert.
Looking ahead, the IMD forecasts isolated to scattered rainfall over Konkan and Goa on June 22. This activity is expected to intensify significantly, leading to fairly widespread and widespread rainfall over the region between June 23 and June 27. Along with the heavy downpour, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph, are likely over Konkan and Goa and Marathwada during June 22-25. Residents in these areas should be prepared for potentially disruptive weather.
