One dead as tourist bus crashes in Canary Islands, 27 injured
A tour bus carrying British tourists plunged into a ravine on La Gomera, leaving one dead and 27 injured as emergency teams rushed to the scene.
A tour bus carrying British tourists crashed into a ravine on La Gomera, killing one man and injuring 27 others. The 28 people on board included 27 Britons and one driver, and the vehicle fell from about 10 meters on the GM-2 road near San Sebastián de La Gomera as the group were en route to the dock for a ferry to Tenerife.
Emergency services were on the scene quickly, with three helicopters and five ambulances deployed to help the injured. Twenty-one people were discharged from Hospital Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe on the island's east, while three remained under observation. Three seriously injured passengers were moved to hospitals on Tenerife, including two who were flown by helicopter for treatment.
The group had been staying at a resort on La Gomera and were travelling to the port for a boat excursion when the crash occurred. Foreign Office officials said they are supporting the family of the deceased, a 77-year-old British man.
The investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing. The road is mountainous with sharp turns, and early images from the scene show the bus near a hairpin bend where it left the road.
