CJI Surya Kant Dismisses Plea Over 'Cockroach Janta Party' Viral Frenzy

“Don’t take it so sentimentally!” That was the clear message from Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday, as he brushed aside a lawyer’s plea regarding the viral sensation known as the “Cockroach Janta Party.” The Chief Justice made it clear that there was no need for the legal community to get worked up over the online frenzy surrounding his previous remarks.

The whole situation started back on May 15, 2026, during a court hearing about individuals holding fake law degrees. The CJI reportedly used the word “cockroach” in reference to these fake degree holders. While the judge later clarified in a statement that he had been misquoted by sections of the media and holds the country’s youth in high regard, the remark quickly took on a life of its own. It spawned a viral online platform and “digital-political formation” called the Cockroach Janta Party.

Advocate N.K. Goswami brought the issue back to the court's attention, expressing anxiety over how the courtroom observation was being “distorted” online despite the official clarification. Another lawyer, Raja Choudhary, went a step further by filing a writ petition. He called for a probe by the CBI and other agencies into the activities of this digital formation. According to the petitioner, the group is involved in the “commercial exploitation” and “monetized circulation” of court remarks, turning serious judicial exchanges into clipped, viral fragments for public spectacle.

Despite the concerns about court hearings being turned into an “outrage” machine, CJI Surya Kant remained unfazed. He stated there was “no grave urgency” to entertain the petition at this time. For now, it seems the Cockroach Janta Party will continue its digital existence without a Supreme Court-mandated investigation.
