India donates relief to Colombo as Cyclone Ditwah hits Sri Lanka
India sends 6.5 tonnes of rations aboard two warships to aid Ditwah victims in Sri Lanka, with PM Modi pledging further help under Operation Sagar Bandhu.
India has stepped up relief efforts for Cyclone Ditwah victims in Sri Lanka, with two warships delivering 6.5 tonnes of rations and other essential items to affected families. The handover comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and pledged more assistance under Operation Sagar Bandhu.
The Indian Navy ships INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri, which were in Colombo for an international fleet review, carried out the relief handover alongside Sri Lankan authorities. The relief materials include food items and other essentials to help families already reeling from floods and landslides triggered by the cyclone.
Sri Lanka has been hit by floods and landslides across the island, leaving 56 people dead and 21 missing, according to the Disaster Management Centre. The northeast monsoon season has intensified rainfall, with Cyclone Ditwah hitting the eastern coast.
Modi, in a social media post, said India stands with Sri Lanka guided by the Neighbourhood First policy and Vision MAHASAGAR, reiterating readiness to scale up aid if required. The relief effort underscores a cooperative maritime response under the broader partnership between the two close neighbors.
