Britain is gearing up for its fourth heatwave of the summer, with temperatures projected to peak at a scorching 35C next week. Forecasters indicate that after a brief respite of rainfall this weekend, especially in the north and north-west, hot and dry conditions are set to return for much of England and eastern Wales.
This summer has already seen record-breaking temperatures, including a sweltering 37.7C recorded in June. A heatwave is officially declared when temperatures exceed local thresholds for three consecutive days. So far, 2026 has experienced three such heatwaves, with the most recent one mostly ending last weekend, bringing cooler air to many areas. However, some locations, like Usk in Monmouthshire and Exeter Airport in Devon, have endured temperatures above heatwave thresholds for an astonishing 19 consecutive days.
Concerns over drought are escalating across the UK due to the prolonged dry and hot conditions. This has led to more than 20 million Britons being placed under hosepipe bans as water companies try to manage dwindling supplies. While some rain and showers are anticipated in the north and north-west this weekend, it's expected to be a temporary break, with high pressure soon building up again over southern England.
Met Office chief meteorologist, Dan Suri, explained that after a long spell of hot, dry, and settled weather, some areas will see a temporary change. He noted that while parts of the north and west might get some rain, many places will receive very little. Suri emphasized that for much of southern England, dry conditions will likely remain dominant, with temperatures quickly recovering and the potential for very warm or locally hot weather to return next week.
