Assam Woman Arrested in Delhi for Forged Embassy Car Plates

A 45-year-old woman from Assam has been arrested in Delhi for allegedly using forged embassy number plates on a car she bought at an embassy auction to access diplomatic areas in the capital, a move that has raised concerns about national security ahead of Republic Day. The arrest was made on January 15 outside a friend’s house in Vasant Vihar. The vehicle bore a fake foreign embassy registration number, and investigators recovered another forged diplomatic plate during the probe. The accused had been on the police radar after tips suggested she frequented embassies in a car bearing plates from the Gabonese embassy.

During questioning, she told investigators that she forged the number plates to resemble those of an embassy in order to evade police checks and gain easy access to diplomatic zones. She also claimed to be a “liaisoner,” facilitating meetings between students interested in studying abroad and parties with embassy officials.

Authorities say the arrest is crucial given the security sensitivities surrounding Republic Day celebrations. Her mobile phone has been seized for analysis, and investigators are verifying her movements and contacts. It has also been noted that her husband is an Assam government official.

The case highlights potential security gaps around diplomatic spaces in Delhi and the ongoing efforts to prevent misuse of embassy-linked identifiers as investigations continue.
