West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently unveiled the State's new tourism logo, signaling a significant push towards revitalizing the sector. The launch, held at the Dhono Dhanyo auditorium in Kolkata, introduced a fresh tagline: "West Bengal, Where India feels different," replacing the previous "Experience Bengal - The Sweetest Part of India." Additionally, a new theme, "Dekhbo Natun Rupe, Dekhbo Natun Chokhe" (See in a new light, see with a new vision), was presented.
While the initiative aims to boost tourism, the new logo has already drawn criticism regarding its design and overall quality. A remark from a Bengal Minister, "Can't ask mosquitoes not to bite," also fueled public discussion, although the context isn't directly related to the logo. Mr. Adhikari announced a substantial allocation of ₹500 crore for tourism development in the current fiscal year.
He stressed the urgent need to enhance infrastructure to attract more visitors, stating,
At one point West Bengal used to be a preferred travel destination. But during the last 15 years, here, we have destroyed our nature and tourism infrastructure. That is why now tourists prefer other States as travel destinations.
The government plans to increase manpower in the industry and revamp existing tourist guesthouses.
Further plans include procuring 11 new boats for water tourism, connecting areas from Babughat on the Ganges to Gangasagar and other small islands. There are also ambitious proposals to plant 20 lakh mangrove saplings in the Sundarbans.
The Chief Minister indicated that the State would collaborate with the Centre to gather innovative ideas for comprehensive tourism development.
