Global Keralites Unite! Thiruvonam Celebrated with Pookkalams & Feasts 🌸🍽️

Keralites around the world joyfully celebrated Thiruvonam on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, marking the grand finale of the 10-day Onam festivities. This vibrant harvest festival, deeply rooted in Malayalam culture, brought together families and communities with its signature traditions, colorful decorations, and sumptuous feasts.

Greetings poured in from top national leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Keralam Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, underscoring the festival's widespread significance. The essence of Onam was beautifully captured through various customs.

Intricate pookkalams, or flower carpets, adorned homes and public spaces, while families donned golden-bordered traditional attire.

The highlight for many was the Onasadya, a lavish vegetarian spread served on plantain leaves, featuring a delectable array of dishes like Olan, erisseri, kaalan, sambar, avial, thoran, pachadi, pulinji, inji thayir, pickle, pappadom, and multiple payasams.

Many families prepared these feasts at home, while others opted for convenient deliveries from hotels and caterers, with the Food Safety wing ensuring vigilance over mass-catered sadyas. Onam is a time for reunion, as Malayalis living abroad often make their way back to 'God's Own Country' to share the festivities with loved ones.

For those unable to travel, the spirit of Onam was recreated wherever they were, complete with pookkalams, Onasadya, traditional songs, dances, and even swings.

Despite evolving times, the fervor of the celebrations remains undimmed, bridging generations and fostering a strong sense of community.

Across Keralam, temples like the famed Guruvayur Sreekrishna temple saw large crowds of devotees, dressed in traditional wear, celebrating despite intermittent rain. Community organizations, residents' associations, and clubs hosted joint celebrations, featuring traditional games like vadamvali (tug-of-war), uriyadi (pot-breaking), and Onapattu (Onam songs), ensuring both the young and old were engaged in the festive spirit.

From Kochi to global cities, the jubilant atmosphere of Thiruvonam resonated widely, making it a truly memorable day for Keralites everywhere.
