Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran on Monday apologised for controversial remarks about actor Trisha Krishnan, saying he had deviated from his principles and that he full-heartedly apologises. He stressed that in his political career he never allowed personal comments and would not repeat such mistakes.
Nagendran spoke to reporters in Tirunelveli, explaining that he had consulted senior party leaders Vanathi Srinivasan and K. Annamalai, who advised him that the remarks were ill-judged. He said he had learned from the incident and would be more careful in the future.
The controversy grew after his remarks involving TVK President Vijay and actress Trisha, prompting the actor to issue an open letter through her lawyer condemning the statements as distasteful and inappropriate. In her letter, she emphasized that she is not affiliated with any political party and wishes to be defined only by her craft, while noting her neutral stance in political matters.
The episode has sparked a broader conversation about decorum in political discourse in Tamil Nadu and how public figures handle personal comments, with many urging more responsible language from leaders.
