Road Deaths in India Hit 1.77 Lakh in 2024, 485 Die Daily
Parliament reports 2024 fatalities at 1.77 lakh with 485 deaths per day; MoRTH outlines a four-pronged plan to curb crashes.
India recorded 1,77,177 road accident fatalities in 2024, a 2.3% rise from the previous year, with about 485 people dying every day, Parliament was told. In the calendar year 2023, states and UTs reported 4,80,583 road accidents, which claimed 1,72,890 lives and left 4,62,825 people injured.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari cited the Stockholm Declaration, which aims to cut road deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030, as part of a global framework to improve road safety.
Based on inputs from states and UTs, the government has framed a multi-pronged strategy built on four E's — Education, Engineering (on roads and vehicles), Enforcement, and Emergency Care. West Bengal data noted via the eDAR portal is included in the compilation.
MoRTH's ongoing assessment also notes Tamil Nadu leading in road accidents, underscoring the need for urgent policy reform and targeted interventions across states.
World Road Statistics 2024 shows India's fatality rate per lakh population at 11.89, compared with 4.3 in China and 12.76 in the United States, highlighting the varied international context of the challenge.
Officials emphasize a coordinated drive to reduce fatalities through safer road design, vehicle standards, enforcement, and better emergency response.
