In Manipur, a 29-year-old Meitei man was killed by unidentified gunmen in Churachandpur district as he visited his wife, who is from the Kuki-Zo community. The attack, captured on video, shows the assailants taking the couple from their home; the wife was allowed to walk away. Demonstrations erupted in the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley and in Kakching, with residents blocking the Indo-Myanmar Sugnu Road seeking justice for the slain man.
Security officials say a video of the killing circulated on WhatsApp from a Guwahati IP address with the message, 'No peace no popular governments.' In response, a joint action committee formed in the Imphal Valley has demanded that the case be handed over to the National Investigation Agency. The incident underscores a deep trust deficit in a state that has been under President’s rule since last year, compounding the long-running tension between hill tribes and the valley’s Meitei community.
Manipur, home to 33 recognised tribes, has faced insurgencies and ethnic clashes for decades.
