Gaza Flotilla Activists Allege Brutal Abuse and Assault in Israeli Detention

Activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla have come forward with harrowing accounts of their time in Israeli detention. The group, consisting of 50 boats carrying aid, was intercepted in international waters about 400 kilometers off the coast. What followed, according to those on board, was a series of violent encounters and mistreatment at the hands of security forces.

Detainees, including journalists and a lawmaker from Italy, were reportedly transferred to military vessels and brought to the Ashdod port. Once there, they were held in shipping containers. Activists described being punched, kicked, and dragged by their hair. Some of the most serious allegations involve the use of tasers, attack dogs, and even claims of sexual assault during their time in custody.

The situation gained further international attention when a high-ranking security official shared a video of himself taunting the detained activists. This move sparked outrage from foreign leaders, leading several countries to summon envoys to express their concerns. While these actions have been widely condemned, officials within the prison service have dismissed all allegations of physical abuse as false and entirely without factual basis.

By late May, roughly 420 activists were deported and arrived in cities like Istanbul and Athens. Many were seen wearing gray sweatsuits and kaffiyehs as they reunited with supporters and shared their experiences. One board member described being forced to keep his head to the ground while listening to others being assaulted nearby. As these testimonies continue to surface, the international community is closely watching the fallout from the intercepted mission to Gaza.
