Sukhbir Badal Attacked: Undergoes Surgery, Discharged in Nanded

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal was attacked with a 'kirpan' (dagger) inside Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji Mugat in Nanded, Maharashtra, on Thursday. The incident led to him undergoing a 90-minute surgery for his injuries, from which he has since been discharged and flown back to Punjab.

Doctors at Yashosai Hospital in Nanded confirmed that Mr. Badal had suffered a tendon injury and a sharp penetrating wound, requiring his tendon and ulnar artery nerve to be repaired by plastic surgeons. They stated that he is now out of danger and in stable condition. He was discharged around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, just a day after the assault.

Visuals circulating show Mr. Badal, who also reportedly escaped an attempt on his life at the Golden Temple entrance in December 2024, walking within the hospital premises with a cloth wrapped around his right hand before his departure. He later proceeded to the Nanded airport to return to Punjab.

Police have identified the accused as Jaspal Singh, a 60-62-year-old individual who holds commerce and law degrees and has been working as a 'sewadar' (volunteer) at the gurdwara for the past two years. Singh, who is typically based in Pune with his family, was staying alone in Nanded. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and police are currently investigating the matter.

Jaspal Singh has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for serious charges, including attempt to murder, voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means, and voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a public servant. This attack has raised concerns about the vulnerability of political leaders and security within religious premises.
