A political row over foreign passports and overseas assets intensified as opposition leaders raised serious claims about Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the wife of Assam's chief minister, and her alleged international ties. They accused Riniki Sharma of holding multiple foreign passports—UAE, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda—and of owning Dubai properties, along with undisclosed overseas assets linked to a Wyoming-based company. The allegations were echoed by Gaurav Gogoi and Pawan Khera, who argued that these links point to deeper overseas connections of the CM’s family. In response, Riniki Sharma rejected the charges, arguing that Gogoi shifted his stance within 24 hours—from claiming a golden visa on an Egyptian passport to alleging an Indian passport—and asserting the claims were politically motivated. The chief minister countered by saying the documents cited by the Congress were fabricated using data from a Facebook group titled “Pakistanis in Ajman,” and that his wife had filed a police complaint against Khera, with warnings of strict legal action.
Sarma also argued that a fake LLC could be created quickly to mislead voters, noting that a similar company had been registered overnight in the names of Gogoi and his wife in Wyoming, supposedly to illustrate how easy it is to generate such records for around $199. He highlighted inconsistencies in the timeline, pointing out that Congress documents mentioned a 2025 meeting, while official Wyoming records showed a recent registration date. The exchange underscored the broader political struggle over transparency of foreign assets and the tactics used in the run-up to elections, with both sides promising legal recourse and vowing to defend their positions publically.
