King Charles III has issued a significant warning about the escalating threats posed by disinformation and other 'hostile online activity' in our increasingly digital world. His comments came in a letter marking the 10th anniversary of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), where he highlighted that 'malicious actors' are continuously 'evolving their tactics by using automated technologies'.
The monarch emphasized the critical role of strong cyber security in maintaining a safer and more resilient online environment. He noted that this is essential for addressing 'threats to our international order' and for navigating the complex balance between the risks and opportunities presented by powerful new technologies.
Just last month, King Charles had a crucial meeting with AI executives at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, where he voiced concerns about the 'existential dangers' if artificial intelligence were to fall into the wrong hands. He pointed out that even the creators of these technologies are increasingly warning about AI's potential to develop 'darker capacities, perhaps even to take life'.
He urged the tech leaders to ensure AI 'remains firmly in the service of humanity, community and the natural world'.
In his letter, the King praised the NCSC for its decade of achievements. He acknowledged their vital work in defending the nation against cyber attacks, safeguarding democratic institutions, and protecting the 'critical infrastructure upon which daily life depends'. He commended the agency for building resilience across public services, businesses, and communities, enabling everyone to thrive in the digital age.
The King also expressed his 'profound gratitude' for the NCSC's often-unseen work.
The NCSC, established in 2016 as part of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), plays a crucial role in protecting the UK from cyber threats.
A recent high-profile incident underscored the very nature of the evolving threats the King warned about.
Earlier this week, the NCSC offered assistance to online retailer Asos after hackers exploited its app system to send notifications to millions of customers.
This breach reportedly compromised detailed user profiles, including names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, customer numbers, and dates of birth, highlighting the sophisticated and personal nature of modern cyber attacks.
