Rahane's Wise Words for Young Star Sooryavanshi: IPL vs. International Cricket

Indian teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, fresh off a record-breaking IPL season, has been making waves in the cricketing world. The 15-year-old prodigy was selected for India's tour to Ireland and England, where he made his international debut, scoring 42 runs in three T20I matches. His debut against England in the second T20I at Manchester saw him break Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record as the youngest Indian cricketer to debut.

Amidst the rising expectations, former Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane, who recently announced his retirement, has offered a word of caution and mentorship. Speaking on the 'Stick to Cricket Podcast' with former England skipper Michael Vaughan, Rahane stressed the importance of letting the young cricketer develop naturally. When asked about Sooryavanshi's potential inclusion in the Indian Test team, Rahane stated, "It’s tough to say or comment right now. I don’t want to say anything and put pressure on that young kid. Because people are already talking a lot about him, a lot about him. It’s just two IPL seasons."

Rahane highlighted the significant difference between franchise cricket and international representation. "What I’ve realised is that IPL and international cricket are completely different. The pressure when you represent your country is enormous. Just for a small example, chasing 70 runs in IPL in 4, 5 overs, it’s easy. Chasing the same amount of runs in international cricket, when you are representing your country is different. So let him just play his game, let him grow," he advised.

Sooryavanshi's IPL journey has been phenomenal. Last year, he became the youngest cricketer to score an IPL hundred against Gujarat Giants. This year, the Bihar cricketer scored an astonishing 776 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 237.30, becoming the first uncapped player ever to score over 700 runs in a single IPL season. Earlier this year, he also guided India U-19 to a World Cup title with a crucial knock of 175 runs against England in the final, showcasing his immense talent and potential.
