Heavy metal titans Mastodon have thrilled fans with the announcement of their highly anticipated new album, ‘Marrow Deep’, set to be released on August 28. This marks their first full-length record in five years, following their 2021 offering, ‘Hushed and Grim’. The news comes alongside the electrifying release of their new single, ‘Snakes For Dinner’, which features a guest vocal appearance from none other than Queens of the Stone Age frontman, Josh Homme.
The upcoming album, distributed via Loma Vista Recordings, promises to be a deeply personal and powerful journey. According to a press release, founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders, and Bill Kelliher have poured years of personal upheaval into the new material, emerging with a renewed sense of purpose and drive. The band has drawn inspiration from the ancient Greek mythology of the Three Fates, channeling intense personal experiences into the album’s lyrical and musical landscape. Fans can also look forward to other as-yet-unnamed special guests contributing to the record.
‘Marrow Deep’ will also introduce new blood to the Mastodon sound, marking the first full-length effort to feature guitarist Nick Johnston. Keyboardist João Nogueira has also made significant contributions, indicating an evolving and expansive musical direction for the Atlanta-based band.
The single ‘Snakes For Dinner’ is a blistering track, showcasing the band’s signature blend of heavy riffs and intricate melodies. Josh Homme's involvement is particularly noteworthy, as this marks his first appearance on a Mastodon recording since his contributions to ‘Colony of Birchmen’ on their acclaimed 2006 album, ‘Blood Mountain’. The accompanying music video for ‘Snakes For Dinner’ also features Homme, adding another layer of excitement for fans.
This new release follows last month’s track, ‘Your Ghost Again’, which was the first song from Mastodon since the passing of their former guitarist, Brent Hinds, in a motorcycle accident last August at the age of 51. While ‘Your Ghost Again’ served as a poignant tribute, ‘Snakes For Dinner’ is the first official preview of the new album's sonic direction.
Bassist Troy Sanders shared his enthusiasm for the band's continued journey, stating, “Bill, Brann, and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us. That’s a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice.
