19-Year-Old Techie Claims to Breach CBSE Portal Using 'Master Password'

Nisarga Adhikary, a 19-year-old who transitioned from a standard Class 12 student to a self-taught tech enthusiast, has sent ripples through the Indian education system. He recently claimed to have uncovered significant vulnerabilities in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) On-Screen Marking (OSM) portal. This system is crucial as it handles the digital evaluation of exam papers for millions of students across the country.

The young techie alleged that the portal contained a "master password" that could potentially allow unauthorized users to bypass standard security protocols. According to Nisarga, such a flaw could allow a malicious actor to not only access the system but also tamper with student marks. His claims have raised serious questions about the digital infrastructure protecting the academic futures of students.

In response to these alarming allegations, CBSE has issued a denial regarding any compromise of their live systems. Board officials clarified that the vulnerabilities highlighted by the teenager were related only to a "testing site" and not the actual evaluation portal used for official marking. They maintain that the integrity of the board’s results remains intact and secure from external interference.

However, the situation has caught the attention of digital rights activists. The Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) has called upon the Ministry of Education to order an independent security audit of the CBSE portal. They argue that a thorough review of the contract with the private firm managing the portal is necessary to ensure better oversight and prevent future risks. The debate continues as experts weigh the difference between a controlled test environment and a potential real-world security crisis.
