PJ Harvey has launched her latest musical offering, ‘Voyager’, a dreamy and lush new single that takes listeners on an interstellar journey. Released today, June 24, via Partisan Records, ‘Voyager’ marks Harvey’s first new music since her Grammy-nominated album ‘I Inside The Old Year Dying’ in 2023, building anticipation for her forthcoming album.
This captivating track wasn’t just a standalone release; it was originally conceived as part of her upcoming album and found an additional purpose when physicist Professor Brian Cox invited her to compose a song for his ‘Emergence’ tour. The collaboration blossomed, leading to a unique piece recorded with a full orchestra at Miraval Studios in Provence, adding a rich, expansive quality to its sound.
The inspiration behind ‘Voyager’ is as profound as its sound. The song draws its name from the legendary NASA probes launched in 1977, which carried Carl Sagan’s ‘Voyager Golden Record’ – a poignant message from Earth to potential intelligent extraterrestrial life. Harvey delves deep into this concept, crafting the song from the unique "voice" of the Voyager 2 spacecraft.
Harvey herself expressed her excitement for the challenge, stating, "I was excited for the challenge to compose a song in the ‘voice’ of Voyager 2. I have long been fascinated by the spacecraft and its journey, and asked myself what it might say to us if it could? This was an inspiring route to take to develop the song." She further revealed how a voice memo of the track resonated with Professor Cox, who immediately envisioned the sound of the Voyager signal returning to Earth. This synchronicity guided the song's development, with Dario Marianelli contributing to the orchestral accompaniment.
