Michael Jackson Biopic Sequel Targeting Late 2027 Release!
Get ready for more King of Pop magic! The Michael Jackson biopic sequel aims for a late 2027/early 2028 release, with production starting soon. What will it cover?
The King of Pop's story is far from over on the big screen! Lionsgate is already targeting a late 2027 or early 2028 release for the highly anticipated sequel to its blockbuster Michael Jackson biopic, "Michael." Fans won't have to wait too long for production to kick off, with filming eyed for the end of 2026 or early 2027.
Lionsgate Chairman Adam Fogelson shared these exciting updates during a recent earnings call, emphasizing the studio's commitment to delivering a follow-up that lives up to the original's massive success. "We are hard at work on making sure that we can put together a sequel that is worthy of the success and enthusiasm that the first movie generated," Fogelson stated, promising audiences "the biggest, best sequel" they deserve.
Interestingly, some "big musical sequences" originally filmed for the first movie but ultimately unused might find their way into the sequel. This suggests an even grander spectacle for fans. The initial film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson as his uncle, concluded in the middle of Jackson's iconic 1987 "Bad" tour. Its impressive run saw it rake in over a billion dollars worldwide, cementing its place as the highest-grossing biopic of all time.
Despite the monumental success, the film's journey wasn't without its complexities. The King of Pop's legacy remains a subject of debate, marred by long-standing allegations of child abuse, which he always denied and his estate continues to deny. Reports indicated that the Jackson estate spent an estimated $15 million to ensure scenes related to these allegations were not included in the first movie. It remains unclear whether the upcoming sequel will delve into this sensitive subject matter.
The financial triumph of "Michael" played a significant role in boosting Lionsgate's recent quarterly results, with its Motion Picture segment revenue more than doubling from the previous year. This strong performance underscores the studio's confidence in extending the narrative of one of music's most enigmatic figures.
