Vaughan Spots Sooryavanshi's Achilles Heel: Can India's Teen Star Endure?
Ex-England captain Michael Vaughan lauds 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's revolutionary T20 batting but flags fielding endurance as a key challenge. Will it be exploited by England?
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has cast a keen eye over the cricketing landscape, singling out 15-year-old Indian sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as a revolutionary force in T20 batting. According to Vaughan, Sooryavanshi has already redefined the benchmarks for T20 scores, pushing par totals into the dizzying heights of 230 runs. This high praise, however, comes with a caveat. Vaughan believes that while Sooryavanshi's batting talent is undeniable, his fielding endurance at the international level could prove to be a significant challenge.
Speaking on Ajinkya Rahane's YouTube channel ahead of India's five-match T20I series against England, set to commence on July 1 in Durham, Vaughan offered a strategic insight to his former team. He suggested that if England wins the toss, they should actively choose to make India bowl first. The rationale behind this, Vaughan explained, is to exploit the physical demands of fielding for a full innings, particularly on a young player like Sooryavanshi. The aim would be to tire him out before he even steps up to open the batting.
Vaughan's specific concern revolves around Sooryavanshi's ability to spend extended periods on the field, a crucial aspect of multi-format cricket where the 'Impact Player' rule isn't applicable. "The one thing he's going to have to cope with is his fielding. There's no impact sub where he can sit on the bench. If I were England, I'd ask India to field first because then by the time Sooryavanshi comes to bat, he might be tired," Vaughan remarked on Rahane's channel.
This observation by Vaughan is particularly pertinent given Sooryavanshi's recent stint in IPL 2026 with the Rajasthan Royals. The team frequently utilized him as an Impact Player, a tactical move that often meant limiting his time in the field. Reports even suggested that this approach surprised the youngster himself, who reportedly takes immense pride in his fielding abilities, a fact confirmed by one of the franchise's coaches.
Despite Vaughan's concerns, it's worth noting that Sooryavanshi has previously demonstrated a strong willingness to commit long hours on the field. During his appearances in the U19 World Cup and the recent Tri-Nation A series, the young batter fielded extensively. However, a key difference in these instances was that India A often batted first, meaning his fielding efforts did not precede his time at the crease.
Beyond the specific challenge of fielding, Vaughan was unequivocal in his admiration for Sooryavanshi's fearless approach to the game. He highlighted the fact that the 15-year-old's name is already a major talking point in cricketing circles, signifying his impact on how T20 cricket is played and perceived. As India gears up for their challenging series against England, all eyes will be on Sooryavanshi, not just for his explosive batting, but also to see how he manages the all-round demands of international cricket.
