Award-winning musician Michael Kiwanuka shares his journey of recovery after a severe stroke earlier this year and excites fans with news of his upcoming album, 'Fudge'. Read his powerful message.
Michael Kiwanuka, the celebrated Mercury Prize-winning musician, has revealed he suffered a severe stroke earlier this year and is now on the road to recovery. The 39-year-old singer shared the deeply personal health update with his fans on Instagram, simultaneously bringing exciting news of his forthcoming album, titled "Fudge."
Kiwanuka explained that the stroke was caused by a bleed on his brain, attributed to high blood pressure.
I'm especially happy because the last few months I've been battling some health problems which would heavily hinder and get in the way of me making music for the foreseeable future,
he wrote, expressing his joy about the new album despite his recent challenges.
The recovery process, he noted, is a significant journey. "It's a long journey recovering from a stroke, which is why I missed some gigs recently out in the US, but I look forward to seeing you all soon," he stated, adding that he is currently unsure when he will be able to perform live again.
He candidly described the severity of his condition: "The brain injury I suffered was quite severe so there's a lot of rehab to be done." Despite the tough road ahead, Kiwanuka remains determined. "It's a long, tough journey ahead but I'm fighting to get better. It has been a difficult few months I must say but it feels like I'm on my way there now."
The artist extended his gratitude to the NHS staff for their care, as well as to his friends, family, and team for their unwavering support. His team, he confirmed, will be keeping fans updated on all things related to "Fudge." Kiwanuka, known for his critically acclaimed 2020 Mercury Prize win for his self-titled album "Kiwanuka," conveyed a message of resilience.
"This has definitely been one of the toughest challenges I've faced and I'll be happy to be on the other side of it when the time comes.
Until then I wish you all well and look forward to seeing you further down the road."
Support poured in, with regular Mercury Prize host Lauren Laverne commenting, "So sorry to read this, Michael. What a time you must have had. Really glad you have good care and wishing you a full recovery asap.
One day at a time. Xx
The music community and fans eagerly anticipate both his full recovery and the release of
Fudge."
