Hyderabad doctor dies by suicide after US visa rejection

A 38-year-old doctor from Andhra Pradesh was found dead in her Hyderabad apartment on Saturday after family members forced entry when she did not respond to repeated calls. Rohini, who hailed from the Guntur district, had long dreamed of moving to the United States for work and had been “eagerly waiting” for visa approval, according to her mother. She had completed MBBS in Kyrgyzstan between 2005 and 2010 and had hoped to specialise in internal medicine. Her mother described Rohini as a brilliant student who dedicated herself to her career, with the visa denial contributing to increasing distress in recent weeks.

Rohini was unmarried and devoted to her profession, with family saying she believed the US opportunity would bring better income and fewer patients per day. In recent weeks, the denial and related disappointments appeared to weigh heavily on her, isolating her and leaving her mentally exhausted, according to relatives. The incident has prompted calls for greater attention to mental health support for professionals facing high pressure and uncertain career prospects.

Authorities said the postmortem will confirm the cause of death, and the investigation will continue as needed. The case underscores the importance of accessible mental health resources and timely help for individuals experiencing distress, especially those with demanding medical careers.
