US Bombs Iran’s Strategic ‘Crown Jewel’, Signals Threat To Oil Network

On Friday, the United States unleashed military action against installations of the main Iranian oil centre, Kharg Island. President Donald Trump declared the operation and threatened that oil infrastructure on the island might also be targeted in case Iran persisted in halting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump posted on social media that the US military had fully destroyed all military targets on the island, noting that it was the crown jewel of Iran. Nevertheless, he presumed that the US had left the oil infrastructure intentionally untouched. Almost 90 per cent of the Iranian oil is exported through Kharg Island, approximately 300 miles (483 km) north-west of the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump Threatens Iran with Future Attacks
The president also asserted that Iran was not in a position to protect itself against American attacks. In his statement, Trump said that Iran and its Military and all others involved with this Terrorist Regime would be better advised to put down their weapons and save what is remaining of their country.
This was in response to increasing tension over attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important maritime routes through which about a fifth of the world's oil supply passes. The oil prices have been volatile in recent days as the markets responded to the comments made by Trump regarding the potential of further military action against Iran.
Russian Oil Exemption Controversy
Thursday, Trump declared a temporary exemption permitting some purchases of selected Russian oil. The action was met with criticism by various US allies in Europe who claimed that it would give the government of Vladimir Putin more money to carry on with the war in Ukraine.
Previously, Trump said that the attacks by Iran on shipping were a last-resort action. During an interview with Fox News that was aired on Friday, he indicated that the United States might carry out more robust strikes against Iran in the next week.
Increased Death Tolls In The Region
The war, which started almost two weeks ago, is said to have claimed some 2,000 lives. The majority of the victims have been in Iran, but deaths have also been reported in Lebanon and in sections of the Gulf region. The violence has forced the displacement of millions of people.
The interior minister of Lebanon stated that the government was unable to provide the hundreds of thousands of refugees who were taking refuge in Beirut with accommodation as Israeli airstrikes continued to hit suburban Beirut.
Israel Intensifies Military Activities
In the meantime, the Israeli military has carried out massive attacks in Tehran. Israeli officials claimed that its air force had struck over 200 targets in western and central Iran over the past day, including their ballistic missile launchers, air-defence systems and weapons manufacturing plants.
Israel also threatened to attack infrastructure in Lebanon further as it prepared to face the forces of Hezbollah, which is an Iranian-supported militant group.
The US Military Strengthens Presence In The Middle East
US forces in the region have also been affected by the conflict. The American military confirmed that 6 crew members were killed after a refuelling aircraft crashed in western Iraq. Iran allegedly used more drones and missiles against Israel. The Iranian drones have also been observed flying towards Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Oman.
In the meantime, the United States is sending additional forces to the area. The Marine expeditionary unit ships aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli are headed into the Middle East. US officials state that an estimated 2,500 more Marines and sailors will be added to the increasing American military presence in the region.
