China's BRICS Ambition: Xi's Plan Raises Red Flags for India

China is increasingly positioning the BRICS grouping as a cornerstone for its grand global ambitions, viewing it as a powerful bloc less susceptible to Western sanctions. This strategic focus has been underscored by President Xi Jinping, who sees BRICS as a critical platform for shaping a multipolar world order.

However, this assertive approach by Beijing within the BRICS framework is beginning to raise significant concerns, particularly for India.

President Xi's recently proposed 5-point action plan for BRICS, while aimed at strengthening the alliance, is prompting red flags in New Delhi.

Indian analysts and policymakers are wary that closer economic integration and technological collaboration under China's leadership could lead to unwanted consequences. Specific anxieties include the potential for China to "cannibalise" markets, flooding them with its goods and hindering domestic industries in other BRICS nations.

The push for a multipolar world order, traditionally linked to de-dollarization efforts, is now expanding to encompass "knowledge sovereignty." This concept emphasizes the importance of member nations controlling and developing their own knowledge bases, especially in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
