The United States Air Force has officially pulled all its bombers from RAF Fairford, a strategic British military base that recently became the focus of a counter-terrorism investigation. This significant withdrawal follows a major security incident on September 27th, where police were alerted to three "suspicious vehicles" near the base in Gloucestershire.
The US did not provide a specific reason for the move, but Whitehall sources have indicated it was a direct response to the unfolding events.
The incident led to the arrest of five UK nationals, aged between 23 and 25, from London, on suspicion of explosives offences and later, preparing a terrorist act. They were subsequently released on police bail, a decision authorities described as an "investigative decision grounded in experience and strategy." A sixth man, a 25-year-old UK-Iranian national, was also later arrested in London and released on bail.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham hinted at "strong indications" of Iranian involvement in the incident, though Tehran vehemently denied these claims and reportedly summoned the British ambassador. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also suggested a "foreign actor" was involved, while President Donald Trump expressed surprise at the release of the arrested individuals, stating, "We know everything about them, we would not have released them."
RAF Fairford has served as a critical forward operating location for the USAF for decades. Notably, in recent months, US bombers have launched from the base for operations in the Middle East, specifically targeting Iran.
This strategic use prompted warnings from Iran in July, stating that
any base used for aggression against Iranian territory constitutes a legitimate target for our forces.
The withdrawal underscores the heightened security concerns and complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding US military presence abroad.
