Back in Washington, President Donald Trump summoned his top national security officials to the Oval Office on Monday to discuss Venezuela, as Nicolás Maduro, speaking to thousands at a Caracas rally, rejected a 'slave's peace' amid mounting fears of American military action.
The White House press secretary said the president would discuss Venezuela and a range of issues, but declined to detail possible moves, including whether U.S. troops could be deployed on the ground. 'There are options at the president’s disposal that are on the table,' she said.
Meanwhile, Washington has moved the world’s largest aircraft carrier and other warships into the Caribbean, and has designated Maduro's government as a terrorist organization to curb drug trafficking, arguing the mission is to cut trafficking networks in the region.
Maduro told supporters in Caracas that Venezuela wants peace with sovereignty, not a 'slave's peace' or 'the peace of colonies.' "We do not want a slave’s peace, nor the peace of colonies," he proclaimed, dancing with flag-waving crowds.
Reports from multiple outlets describe Trump issuing an ultimatum to Maduro to step down in exchange for safe passage, which Maduro reportedly refused, while warnings about closing Venezuelan airspace circulated. The discussions also touched on the possibility of broader options on the table if talks collapse.
