A US-led blockade of sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela has intensified, with President Trump pressing Maduro to step aside as Washington keeps or sells oil seized near Venezuelan waters. The move marks a sharp escalation in a high-stakes standoff over control of Venezuelan energy assets and regional influence.
China and Russia have voiced support for Venezuela as it confronts the blockade and a slowing flow of crude. Amid reports of reduced activity at Venezuelan ports, most ships are moving oil only between domestic terminals, and millions of barrels remain aboard vessels that have yet to unload. The White House described the vessel as part of Venezuela’s shadow fleet, though the ship was not officially sanctioned by Panama.
China’s foreign ministry characterized the seizure of additional ships as a serious violation of international law, while Russia expressed its full support for Venezuela amid what it calls hostility from the United States. The unfolding events have drawn attention to the broader geopolitical contest surrounding Venezuela’s oil, with diplomatic rhetoric and real-world shipping risks shaping the market outlook.
