Cricket fans, mark your calendars! The 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya is setting the stage for a potential dream clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, but only if both teams can navigate their way to the gold medal match.
The draw for the cricket events, released on Thursday, confirmed that both the men's and women's teams from India and Pakistan have been placed in opposite halves of their respective competitions. This strategic seeding means that spectators will only get to witness the high-voltage rivalry in the final showdown for the gold medal, adding immense anticipation to the tournament.
The cricket action is scheduled to take place from September 19 to October 4, 2026. The men’s competition will feature 10 teams, while eight nations will compete in the women’s event. By virtue of their higher T20I rankings, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have secured direct entry into the quarter-finals for the men's competition, giving them a slight advantage in their quest for glory.
The remaining six men's teams, Afghanistan, Hong Kong China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates, have been divided into two preliminary groups. Group A includes Afghanistan, Hong Kong China, and Singapore, while Group B comprises the UAE, Japan, and Malaysia. The top two teams from each of these groups will advance to the quarter-finals to join the direct entrants.
India, who clinched the gold medal when cricket returned to the Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023, will be looking to defend their title. In the 2023 final, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the men’s team defeated Afghanistan after rain halted play and India was awarded the gold based on their higher group-stage seeding.
For the women's event, India will commence their title defense in the quarter-finals against hosts Japan. A victory there would see them face either Bangladesh or People's Republic of China in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Pakistan's women's team will start their campaign against Thailand in the quarter-finals and could potentially meet Sri Lanka in the last four. This setup means that just like their male counterparts, the Indian and Pakistani women's teams also have a clear path to a thrilling final encounter.
