External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has recently addressed crucial geopolitical developments, notably downplaying the significance of the emerging defence pact between Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. While acknowledging its existence, Jaishankar questioned the pact's actual efficacy, remarking, "What has it done amid live military situations in these countries?" He affirmed that India would nonetheless incorporate this alliance into its security calculus, remaining vigilant about actions taken by countries "not well disposed" towards India.
Shifting focus to India's complex relationship with China, Jaishankar highlighted the challenging period endured between 2020 and 2024, primarily stemming from the tense situation in border areas. Despite these geopolitical frictions, the Minister underscored the substantial economic interdependence between the two nations. He emphasized that both India and China represent significant economies and markets for each other, advocating for continued global engagement.
"The world is competitive. We must build up our strengths. We have to do business with the entire world. That includes China too," Jaishankar stated, stressing the importance of dealing with all nations, including China, with confidence and firmly standing one's ground, as demonstrated in border disputes. This stance comes in the wake of severe strains in India-China ties, particularly following the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes and the subsequent military standoff in eastern Ladakh, which deeply impacted bilateral relations. India continues to navigate these intricate relationships with a strategic and pragmatic approach, prioritizing national security while fostering global economic partnerships.
