Alternative music luminary Chelsea Wolfe has officially announced her ninth studio album, 'The Dark', revealing that the project was profoundly shaped by a period of significant personal upheaval. Speaking about the inspiration behind the new work, Wolfe shared that she “needed to go through some difficult times to stop self-abandoning,” hinting at the deeply personal themes explored throughout the record.
Set to be released next month, 'The Dark' marks a distinct shift in Wolfe’s sound, moving towards a more “bone-bare, delicate, slow-burning alt-rock” aesthetic. This follows her 2024 industrial-tinged predecessor, 'She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She'. Fans have already had a taste of the new direction with the lead single, 'Cold', which was launched alongside the album announcement. Additionally, previously shared tracks “Death Is Not The End” and the album’s title track, “The Dark,” will also feature on the upcoming release.
The enigmatic Californian artist, celebrated for blending folk, rock, and doom metal with her signature haunting vocals, collaborated with Jennifer Decilveo and long-time partner Ben Chisholm on the album’s production. Wolfe specifically credited Decilveo, known for her work with artists like Hozier and Miley Cyrus, with helping to unlock the album's core direction. During recording sessions in Los Angeles, Decilveo's direct questions, such as, “What do you want this record to be?”, helped Wolfe clarify her vision, leading her to consciously return to starting songs on acoustic guitar or piano with vocals as the foundation.
Wolfe emphasized the strong creative synergy with Decilveo, noting their shared perspective as women in the music industry and a mutual understanding of studio time being dedicated to the creative process itself. This collaborative spirit, along with contributions from musicians like Stella Mozgawa and Robin Finck, has evidently crafted an album poised to explore raw emotion and vulnerability through a refined musical lens. The album promises to be a compelling addition to Wolfe's respected discography within alternative music circles.
