A Russian warship, the frigate Neustrashimy, recently conducted a rare live-fire exercise just 45 miles south of Plymouth in international waters, raising eyebrows and underscoring heightened maritime tensions between the UK and Russia. The incident, which occurred on Monday morning, saw the Russian vessel suddenly announce its intention to fire its guns and request a British warship, HMS Tyne, to move to a safe distance.
HMS Tyne, which had been tracking the Neustrashimy, repositioned to allow the 130-metre-long frigate to carry out a 30-minute firing drill around 9:30 am. While such exercises in international waters are legal if proper safety warnings are issued, conducting them at short notice and in close proximity to another country is considered unusual.
The Neustrashimy is a formidable vessel, armed with anti-ship cruise missiles, a 100mm gun capable of firing 50 rounds a minute, and Gatling rotary machine guns for air defense. It has not been confirmed what specific weapons were used during this test.
This latest event follows a period of increased Russian naval activity near British waters. Earlier this month, the Neustrashimy arrived to replace another Russian frigate, the Admiral Grigorovich, which had been on an extended deployment in the Channel or North Sea. The Admiral Grigorovich itself was involved in an incident last month, reportedly firing warning shots within metres of a British pleasure yacht south of the Isle of Wight. These events highlight a growing pattern of confrontational maneuvers in the region.
The maritime relationship between the UK and Russia is currently in a state of elevated tension, further exacerbated by incidents such as the recent seizure of a Russia-linked oil tanker in the Channel by Royal Marines. These repeated close encounters and exercises serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing geopolitical complexities at sea.
