Hacks Star Hannah Einbinder Arrested at Fiery Anti-Netanyahu Protest in NYC!
Actress Hannah Einbinder, Susan Sarandon & more detained during a protest outside the UN against Netanyahu's address. Einbinder urges focus on 'genocidal war' in Gaza.
“Hacks” star Hannah Einbinder was among over 100 protesters detained by New York police during a significant sit-in outside the UN headquarters on Thursday. The protest, which also saw the arrest of Oscar-winning actor Susan Sarandon, comedian Caleb Hearon, and whistleblower Chelsea Manning, was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace ahead of Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the General Assembly.
Following her arrest, Einbinder took to Instagram to issue a powerful statement, emphasizing that attention should remain on Israel’s actions in Gaza and Southern Lebanon, rather than the spectacle of celebrity arrests.
If the pictures of my friends and me getting arrested in protest of Netanyahu’s shameful visit to New York draw attention to anything, let it be to the devastating genocidal war Israel is waging against the people of Palestine and Southern Lebanon,
she wrote. She condemned the “crimes that happen every single day but garner almost no international press coverage,” including settler attacks, home demolitions, and bombings.
Other notable figures present at the demonstration included Cynthia Nixon, Elliot Page, Indya Moore, comedians Sarah Sherman and Mary Beth Barone, and musicians Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. Protesters blocked First Avenue for approximately an hour, carrying signs like “Fund people not bombs” and chanting “Free, free Palestine” and “Netanyahu, you can't hide!
We charge you with genocide!” Police eventually ordered the crowd to disperse before making arrests.
Einbinder also directed strong criticism towards the US government, asserting that it has the power to halt the conflict but instead “chooses to welcome the butcher of Gaza with open arms.” She described Netanyahu’s presence in New York as an “indictment of both Republicans and Democrats who enable and protect architects of genocide.” Concluding her statement, she urged, “not mistake the spectacle for the story,” declaring, “Genocide is the headline, and it is time for it to end.”
Inside the UN General Assembly, dozens of delegates staged a walkout as Netanyahu began his speech, a clear demonstration of opposition to his country’s actions in Gaza.
Netanyahu, in response, labeled them “moral cowards.”
