Zach Bryan's Bold Statement: 'Free Palestine' Shirt at Gillette Stadium
Country music star Zach Bryan makes a powerful statement by wearing a 'Free Palestine' shirt at Gillette Stadium, reigniting controversy following Robert Kraft's ban on Macklemore. Find out why!
Country music sensation Zach Bryan recently took the stage at Gillette Stadium for the first of his two-night sold-out run, making a significant statement by wearing a shirt emblazoned with “Free Palestine.” This act of solidarity appears to be a direct response to stadium owner Robert Kraft’s decision to ban rapper Macklemore from the venue earlier this year for similar public expressions.
The controversy began in early September when Macklemore, performing at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium during Ed Sheeran's tour, vocalized his support for Palestinians, expressed solidarity with those in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, and showcased images from the conflict. He also performed his protest song, “Hind's Hall,” which addresses pro-Palestine demonstrations at Columbia University.
The rapper faced swift backlash from pro-Israel groups and was subsequently removed from the remainder of Sheeran's stadium tour.
Macklemore later alleged that his removal was due to a pressure campaign mounted by Kraft against Sheeran.
Kraft confirmed his decision to bar Macklemore from Gillette, citing the rapper's “recent actions” and “material shared from the stage” during Sheeran's shows. However, Kraft did not address claims that he also rallied other stadium owners to pressure Sheeran.
Following Macklemore's removal, all artists supporting Sheeran on his Loop Tour withdrew in solidarity. Finneas, among others, publicly stated his decision to withdraw, emphasizing,
Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed. I stand with Palestine and its people.
Weeks after the initial controversy, Macklemore announced his own headlining “Free Palestine Tour,” which reportedly sold out immediately. He stated, “We put these shows together fast and in community, believing that musicians can stand in solidarity with Palestine, use the stage to raise funds, and show what collective action can look like. When those in power try to silence our calls for liberation, art will always be a form of resistance.”
Zach Bryan’s choice to wear the “Free Palestine” shirt at Gillette Stadium, a venue owned by Kraft, clearly underscores a continuing wave of celebrity activism surrounding the conflict, sending a message that artists are willing to use their platforms despite potential repercussions.
