Global music sensation Karol G recently opened up about her groundbreaking moment as the first Latina artist to headline Coachella, expressing a surprising sentiment: she feels it was "incorrect." The Colombian superstar shared her unfiltered thoughts on the matter during a recent interview, highlighting a significant conversation she had with Paul Tollett, CEO of Goldenvoice, the company behind Coachella.
"The fact that I was the first one just feels wrong — it feels incorrect," Karol G stated, reflecting on her historic performance. She was bold enough to voice this perspective directly to Tollett when he visited her trailer after she closed out the first weekend of the festival. She recalled telling him, "I mentioned how crazy it was that it took 27 years [since] the festival [began] to finally bring a Latina to the stage as a headliner."
According to Karol G, Tollett received her feedback with understanding. "He was very kind. He said, ‘I should apologize,'" she recounted, adding that while she didn't want to make him feel bad, he acknowledged the reality of the situation. Karol G emphasized that many talented Latin artists could and should have graced that stage before her. She listed a powerful roster of names, questioning, "What if Daddy Yankee had headlined Coachella? Or Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Shakira?"
Her point resonates deeply, considering Coachella's nearly three-decade history. Before Karol G, only one other Latin act, Bad Bunny in 2023, had ever headlined the main stage, becoming the first Latin musician to do so. This underscores a long-standing gap in representation at one of the world's most prominent music festivals.
Despite her critical reflection, Karol G undeniably seized her moment, using the platform to celebrate her heritage. During her performance, she passionately urged her fans to "feel proud, raise your flag," making her set a vibrant tribute to Colombian culture and the broader Latino community.
