WhatsApp Rolls Out Message Translation on iOS and Android
WhatsApp now offers on-device translation, letting you translate messages in chats, groups, and channels. Pick languages, save translations, and enable auto-translate—all while keeping data private on-device.
The Meta-owned company WhatsApp said Tuesday that it is introducing a feature that allows users to translate messages into the language of their choice. Users can now long-press and select "Translate" if they see a message in a different language. After that, users can download it for later use and choose the language they wish to translate from or to. WhatsApp mentions that group chats, channel updates, and one-on-one conversations can all have their messages translated.
To see all incoming messages in that conversation translated in the future, Android users can choose to enable automatic translation for the entire chat thread. The company points out that messages stay encrypted because translations take place on the user's device, where WhatsApp cannot see them. In a blog post, WhatsApp stated,
"With over 3 billion users across 180 countries, we're always working to keep our users closely connected, no matter where they are in the world."
“But we understand that sometimes language can be a barrier to getting things done or expressing how you truly feel. That’s why we’re excited to bring message translations to WhatsApp, so you can more easily communicate across languages.”
A few months after Apple introduced live translation in Messages, the change was made. Beginning on Tuesday, users of iPhones and Android devices will be able to translate messages.
English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic are the six languages in which Android users can access translations. It is available to iPhone users in Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
