Michael Jackson biopic eyes $100M NA opening after India debut
Michael, the Jackson biopic, dominates India box office and is on track for a $100M opening in North America, drawing comparisons with recent musical biopics.
Michael has secured the biggest opening for a Hollywood film at the India box office this year, with more than Rs 10 crore earned on day two. The biopic is drawing strong crowds despite stiff competition from Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, which released on March 19 and has claimed a large share of screens.
In North America, the film opened to $39.5 million across 3,955 theatres and is projected to gross between $90 million and $100 million by the end of its opening weekend. If that holds, Michael would become the biggest opening for a musical biopic, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody’s $51 million debut.
The production notes reveal a budget of about $155 million, with last‑minute reshoots totalling around $15 million to adjust the film’s third act. With no fresh North American releases this week, Michael faces potential competition next week from The Devil Wears Prada 2, a workplace dramedy featuring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt.
In India, the competition from Dhurandhar 2 continues to shape the box office landscape, while Michael’s strong start signals a robust worldwide rollout and a potential milestone run for a musical biopic.
