Pakistan's BRICS Bid Stalled: Is India The Roadblock?

Islamabad has officially confirmed its bid to join BRICS, the influential economic bloc of emerging markets. The application was publicly announced in 2023 by Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch during a weekly press briefing.

Baloch stated,

Yes, I can confirm that Pakistan has made a formal request to join BRICS, which we believe is an important grouping of developing countries.

This move came as BRICS, then under Russia's presidency, was preparing for a significant expansion of its membership.

Despite Pakistan's clear interest and formal application, its entry into BRICS appears to be stalled. Reports indicate that the primary obstacle preventing Pakistan from joining the bloc is the opposition from India, a prominent member of the BRICS grouping. This opposition is described as an "insurmountable roadblock," effectively halting any progress on Pakistan's request.

BRICS, which currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and recently expanded to include several other nations, aims to foster cooperation among major emerging economies. For Pakistan, joining such a grouping would offer significant economic and diplomatic advantages, aligning with its strategic interests in strengthening ties with developing nations and seeking new avenues for economic collaboration.

However, the existing geopolitical dynamics, particularly its relationship with India, continue to play a critical role in its international aspirations.
