Zach Bryan Ignites Controversy at Gillette Stadium with 'Free Palestine' Shirt
Country-rock star Zach Bryan made a bold political statement at Gillette Stadium, donning a 'Free Palestine' shirt during his headlining show. This comes after Macklemore was barred from the same venue for similar views.
Country-rock sensation Zach Bryan made headlines during his recent headlining appearance at Robert Kraft's Gillette Stadium, not just for his music, but for a powerful political statement. Bryan took the stage on Friday night wearing a “Free Palestine” T-shirt, a move that immediately drew widespread attention and sparked debate.
This unexpected act occurred in the very venue where rapper Macklemore was previously barred from performing due to his pro-Palestine remarks, highlighting a persistent tension between artistic expression and venue ownership.
Bryan's shirt, with its sleeves cut off as is his custom, bore the “Free Palestine” logo alongside an emblem of a pine tree and the message “An Appeal to Heaven.” This latter phrase references a historical flag commissioned by George Washington in 1775 for the Massachusetts Navy, giving the statement a distinct local and historical context for the Boston-area show. Adding to the message, at least two of Bryan's band members also wore Palestine jerseys.
His drummer, Nate Head, notably donned a jersey featuring “Palestine” on the front and, on the back, the number 5 and the name “Hind Rajab.” Rajab was a 5-year-old girl tragically reported to have been killed by Israeli military tank fire in Gaza in January 2024, after being trapped and pleading for help. Head later shared footage of himself in the jersey on Instagram, with hashtags like “RIP Hind Rajab” and “Free Palestine.” Bryan's guitarist, Noah Le Gros, also wore a green Palestine soccer jersey and was seen posing backstage in front of a Kraft Sports & Entertainment sign.
The choice by Bryan, a proud Navy veteran operating within the country music genre, surprised many.
Country music's fan base is not universally known for embracing such political stances, leading to a deeply divided reaction among his followers on social media platforms as news of his wardrobe spread.
While some conservative fans expressed negative feedback, pockets within the right who oppose Israel's actions in Gaza applauded his stance, with figures like Candace Owens commending him for his actions.
Amidst the unfolding controversy, some news outlets circulated a widely shared but ultimately false statement attributed to Bryan on Saturday.
This statement, which purported to defend his stance, originated from an X account that is not officially associated with the singer. Bryan's actual X account has been deactivated for some time, a pattern he has shown previously of deactivating and reactivating after contentious posts.
Bryan and his band were scheduled to perform a second consecutive night at Gillette Stadium, with reports indicating only a few hundred tickets remaining for the 70,000-capacity venue. His on-stage statement has certainly ignited a significant conversation, underscoring the increasing intersection of music, politics, and social commentary in public spheres.
