Mount Fuji Father Leaves 7-Year-Old Son Alone on Mountain

In a bewildering incident that has sparked widespread concern, a father has been reprimanded by Japanese police after leaving his 7-year-old son alone for several hours on the treacherous slopes of Mount Fuji. The alarming event unfolded at an altitude of over 2,000 meters (6,500ft), where the young boy was discovered by vigilant mountain staff.

The boy was reportedly found sitting on a bench in foggy and rainy conditions, with only a soft drink and snack to keep him company. His 48-year-old father was hiking with his two sons on the iconic Fujinomiya route when the younger boy complained of being tired. Instead of accompanying his son or turning back, the father allegedly instructed him to "wait here" and then proceeded to continue the climb towards the summit with his elder son.

Concerned staff at a mountain hut discovered the child near the sixth station of the hiking route and promptly alerted authorities. Police were able to track down the father at the eighth station, a location said to be about a three-hour hike away from where his son was left unattended.

Upon his return and reunion with his son, officers sternly castigated the father for his actions. According to local reports, one officer emphasized, "Even if it means having to give up on climbing the mountain together, leaving a child behind is unacceptable." The father is said to have apologized for what he termed a "rash" decision.
