Boy Harsher, the acclaimed darkwave duo comprising Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller, has officially announced their highly anticipated new album, "GET MEAN." This marks their major label debut, arriving via Atlantic Records, and is set to drop on September 18.
Alongside the album announcement, the duo has released a new single, "Hard Beat," complete with a self-directed music video. The track continues Boy Harsher's signature minimalist, bouncing sound, blending bleary danceability with an industrial sonic palette. The video is described as Gregg Araki-esque, featuring a "deviant" couple speeding down a highway amidst surreal symbols and characters. Fans previously got a taste of the new record with the uptempo single "Jeans," which will also be featured on the forthcoming album.
Adding a poignant layer to this release, the album comes in the wake of a significant personal development for Matthews and Muller. The couple, who formed and grew the band together, ended their romantic partnership in early 2024. This split initially cast uncertainty over the future of Boy Harsher. However, following a period of travel and introspection for Matthews, the creative process for "GET MEAN" began to take shape. The duo channeled their experiences into this new chapter, recording the album in eight diverse locations across the U.S., Mexico, and Italy, culminating in a powerful and expanding visual and sonic world.
