Taiwan has launched a groundbreaking website aimed at collecting intelligence from Chinese citizens, inviting those "who share the same values of democracy" to collaborate in reporting on Beijing. This initiative comes amidst heightened tensions, as China asserts its claim over democratic Taiwan, threatening force to achieve reunification, while Taipei frequently accuses Beijing of employing espionage and infiltration tactics to undermine its defenses.
The National Security Bureau (NSB) of Taiwan officially introduced the new platform, accompanied by a compelling one-minute, AI-generated video. The video depicts a Chinese civil servant witnessing colleagues being removed and investigated, a scene intended to reflect "a pervasive atmosphere that everyone is on edge under China's totalitarian regime," according to a statement from the NSB.
The bureau indicated that an "increasing number" of individuals have already reached out to various agencies in Taiwan, expressing a desire to "provide various types of information." This new reporting channel is explicitly modeled on "practices adopted by intelligence agencies in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel," suggesting a robust and established framework for information gathering.
The NSB also affirmed its commitment to a stringent vetting process. It stated that it would "rigorously filter," evaluate, and follow up on all submissions received through the platform, employing advanced technology to ensure the integrity and reliability of the intelligence. When approached for further comment, the NSB did not immediately respond to inquiries.
