We often force students to choose between the hard sciences and the soft arts as if they exist in separate universes. But why can’t a poet have the brain of a biologist? There is a profound beauty in applying the rigor of scientific inquiry—the taxonomy, the order, and the meticulous methods of organic chemistry—to the rhythmic constraints of a poem. I truly believe that the most powerful creative voices are those who refused to let go of their analytical training. If you look at how things grow and why they belong together through a scientific lens, your writing gains a structural integrity that pure emotion often lacks.
