One Battle After Another absolutely swept the Academy Awards last night, taking home six statues including the heavy hitters: Best Director and Best Picture. It is a massive statement for cinematic scale, though I can't help but feel it was the 'safe' choice for the Academy. Meanwhile, Sinners cleaned up in the categories that arguably matter most for storytelling, grabbing four awards including Best Screenplay and a much-deserved Best Actor win. It is the classic showdown between technical spectacle and raw, character-driven narrative. While One Battle is a masterpiece of craft, Sinners felt more human. Is the Academy rewarding the biggest production or the best story?
