We have completely lost the art of taking smart risks. I have been thinking lately about how taking a calculated leap: like starting a new career, moving to a new city, or just striking up a conversation with a stranger: brings so much joy and profound meaning to our lives. But instead of encouraging healthy, growth-oriented risks, our society increasingly pushes us toward the reckless kind. We are constantly bombarded by forces: whether it is predatory financial apps, hyper-consumerism, or algorithmic gambling: that actively profit off our impulsive, dangerous choices. We are discouraged from stepping outside our comfort zones in ways that actually matter, yet highly encouraged to roll the dice when someone else can make a quick buck off our loss.
