It is absolutely wild to think that despite our billion-dollar particle accelerators, quantum computers, and deep-space telescopes, every single piece of experimental data we collect still relies on two primitive, Stone-Age techniques: counting and comparing. We love to dress up our 'advanced' scientific achievements in complex terminology, but at the end of the day, a scientist is just a caveman with a faster way to tally objects or a more precise stick to hold up against a rock. Whether we are measuring the mass of a Higgs boson or the distance to a far-off galaxy, we’re either saying 'there are X of these' or 'this is bigger than that.'
