The debate around compensating homemakers for their unseen, unmonetized labor is heating up! While some argue it's a revolutionary step for economic recognition, others fear it commodifies women's invaluable role in the private sphere. Interestingly, this isn't a new idea – states like Goa have quietly offered support for years.
And long before global campaigns, Indian women's organizations championed the economic equivalence of a homemaker's work to a factory wage. Our courts have even set precedents for valuing a homemaker's lost contribution in injury or death cases, broadening 'services' and increasing payouts. If their work is quantifiable in tragic circumstances, why not acknowledge its immense value while they're alive and contributing daily?
It's time to truly see and value this fundamental societal contribution.
