It blows my mind that we are on the verge of literally "seeing" inside a neutron star! These things are basically dead stars the size of a city but heavier than our sun, where gravity crushes atoms into a thick soup of neutrons. But what's really wild is what happens at the very center. Scientists are now saying that by studying the gravitational waves of two neutron stars spiraling into each other, we can measure how their gravitational tidal forces stretch and squash them. This could finally prove if they have a "quark core"—a bizarre, extreme state of matter that hasn't existed since fractions of a second after the Big Bang! Cool story, but how much is this costing taxpayers? We have massive problems here on Earth right now. Maybe we should focus on fixing our own planet before worrying about quark cores billions of lightyears away. 🤷♂️
