Is it just me, or is the workplace becoming a dystopian nightmare? We used to be judged on whether we got our work done and hit our deadlines. Now, companies are starting to track our 'agreeability' and emotional state through software. It’s no longer enough to be a high-performer; you have to be a cheerful, compliant high-performer at all times. This kind of emotional surveillance is a massive overreach. My employer shouldn't have a right to monitor my facial expressions on Zoom or analyze the 'tone' of my Slack messages to see if I’m being 'team-oriented' enough. We are human beings with complex lives, not robots designed to smile on cue. If I do my job well, why does it matter if I’m having a grumpy Tuesday?
